Execs in the deep end for charity swim

The 2010 Rottnest Channel 20km Swim will see two pharmacy executives strip to their Speedos and brave the waves, all in the name of charity.

General manager at Symbion, Andrew 'AV' Vidler, and national brand development manager at Terry White Chemists, Chris 'Swifty' Swifte, are aiming to raise $100,000 for three worthy charities – Young Care, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Bowel Cancer and Digestive Research Institute Australia – when they tackle the 20km stretch of sea between Perth's Cottesloe Beach and Rottnest Island on Saturday 20 February.

"In recent times, both Swifty and I have lost friends and male business colleagues affected by men's health issues, particularly bowel and prostate cancer," Mr Vidler said.

"We also want to support young people who find themselves in need of 24-hour nursing care so they don’t have to be inappropriately placed in geriatric nursing homes."

The swim will take the pair six to seven hours to complete, with each team needing a boat, crew and a paddler to accompany them.

While companies such as Symbion Pharmacy Services, Terry White Chemists, Medibank and Apotex have already pledged their support and helped take donations to $30,000, more generosity is needed.

"We're asking all our friends, suppliers and customers in the industry to get behind us and help us raise $100,000 for charity. We need the incentive to distract us from the sharks…" laughed Mr Swifte.
