Residential aged care staff can now order drugs electronically, streamlining communication between pharmacists, doctors and aged care homes.

Webstercare has announced the introduction of its eWebstercare platform, which will allow scripts to be ordered, tracked, changed and ceased electronically.

The system will allow users to view medication profiles and demographic details of residents and send messages such as notification of new resident admissions or requests for replacement doses.

Care staff will be able to reorder drugs through the system which pharmacy staff will then action by sending a message of approval of a request for more information.

Pharmacy staff will also have the ability to audit the medication profile for each resident.

"Our IT people have worked with all parties who will use eWebstercare to create the smoothest and safest access of medication management for the aged care industry," Webstercare managing director Gerard Stevens said.

Doctor will be able to view and change patients profiles, which will then be emailed to pharmacies, though pharmacists will still require doctors' approvals when dispensing new medications.

"We now have the facility, called MedSig, which will allow nurses to electronically sign for medications during an administration round,” Mr Stevens said.

"The electronic medication chart is also incorporated into the system to ensure that the doctor's order is accessible during the round."
