Xylitol dental care gum hits shelves

Oral care manufacturer Miradent has marked its entry into the Australian market with the introduction of a novel dental chewing gum.

Pharmacies can now, for the first time, stock Xylitol chewing gum which, the company claims, is clinically proven to actively remove plaque and re-mineralise the enamel.

"There is a great deal of research showing that chewing xylitol can significantly reduce tooth decay, but until now there has not been a xylitol-based chewing gum available in Australia," University of Sydney dental studies lecturer Dr Yvonne Sum said.

"We should encourage people to try chewing xylitol-based gum to make the most of these oral health benefits. We also know that the chewing action itself stimulates saliva, which naturally prevents plaque build-up, so chewing this kind of gum after meals should be a part of everybody’s oral health routine."

Miradent also launched Mirawhite Oxygen, a peroxide-free tooth whitening system that uses oxidation technology to whiten teeth at home.

At last I can buy xylitol-based gum here in Australia! Thank you Miradent for bringing this product into the Australian market. My dentist has strongly recommended the product to me as well... apparently testing has shown that chewing the gum leads to 90% less cavities five years down the track.

I'm surprised that a xylitol-based gum hasn't been available until now. I am familiar with this as a dental health aid from my partner (a dental hygenist) who raves about it. Apparently has some incredible dental health properties and has been in use in Sweden/Germany for over 10 years
