Father-daughter team Pharmacy of the Year finalist
Family affair: Sarah McInerney with her father Gerry at their pharmacy in Kiama, NSW.
The second semi-finalist in the Pharmacy Guild of Australia/Johnson and Johnson Pharmacy of the Year 2008 competition has been announced.
McInerney’s Seven Day Pharmacy in Kiama on the South Coast of NSW is run by father and daughter team Gerry (who is also president of the NSW Pharmacy Board) and Sarah McInerney.
The pharmacy provides a range of professional and medicine management services, including palliative care and diabetes services, Home Medicines Reviews (HMR), Dose Administration Aids (DAA) and Medication Profiling (MP).
The McInerney’s pride themselves on the expert advice and information they provide to their customers to ensure quality use of medicines, including their aged care patients who receive home-delivered and Webster-packed medicines.
The pair said they have a strong focus on human resource management and view their staff as the heart of their business.
"We have a diverse range of pharmacy staff in relation to age. This provides some interesting topics of conversation throughout the day, as well as innovative ideas at our staff training and planning sessions," Ms McInerney said.
The introduction of S2/S3 scenario training and scheduled incidental daily training throughout the week are just two examples of the pharmacy's innovative approach to training.
All staff at McInerney's Pharmacy are involved in the development of "action plans", which focus on areas for pharmacy practice development in a quality improvement framework.
In this way, the business has built up its DAA and MP services, developed a quarterly pharmacy magazine disseminating health promotion messages and planned for front-of-shop presentations.
