New birth control pill

BAYER Schering Pharma has introduced a new anti-androgenic oral contraceptive to Australia.

Valette is a new option particularly suited to women requiring a preparation with anti-androgenic activity.

Valette contains a new progestogen called dienogest, which has been shown to exert anti-androgenic activity, leading to positive effects on the skin and hair, and to a reduction in acne lesions and sebum production.

Dienogest also has a short plasma half-life and metabolically negligible effects on the body.

With a balanced combination of 2mg dienogest and low-dose (30µg) ethinyloestradiol, Valette provides effective contraception, more regular cycles and lighter, less painful menstruation, in addition to its anti-androgenic properties, according to Bayer Schering Pharma.

Valette is indicated for contraception and is offered in one-monthly and three-monthly 28-day packs.
