Serevent MDI discontinued
The Serevent (salmeterol xinafoate) Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) will be discontinued, GSK has announced.
The Serevent MDI (Green Inhaler) will be discontinued as of 31 December 2007 as its CFC propellant is being phased out in accordance with international standards, GSK told pharmacists today.
The drug company said Serevent MDI will be delisted from the PBS as of 1 May 2008, after which a return policy will apply to all stock remaining in pharmacies. Pharmacies with unsold stock should return it to their preferred wholesaler by 1 June 2008. Stock returned after this date will not be credited, GSK said.
The expiry date of all remaining Serevent MDI inhalers is 2 July 2009.
GSK said pharmacists would have a vital role to play in assisting patients during their transition to another treatment and in referring patients to their doctor for review.
"In accordance with TGA guidelines, the timeframe for discontinuation should allow sufficient time for the review of Serevent MDI customers," the company said in a statement.
Where appropriate, the Serevent Accuhaler may be considered as an alternative for those patients currently on Serevent MDI, GSK has advised.
