Generics hinging on generational change

A generation chasm within community pharmacy needs to be bridged before generic substitutions take a greater hold in the sector, the head of one of the main generic manufacturers has warned.
Speaking at a conference on generic medicines in Sydney yesterday, Genepharm chief executive Dennis Bastas said only generational change was going to bring about a more widespread acceptance of generics by pharmacists.
According to Mr Bastas, Australian pharmacy was split between a bottom quarter of pharmacies substituting only 10 per cent of their dispensed drugs with generics and a top quarter substituting between 70 and 80 of prescriptions with generics.
