Pharmacy gender salary divide revealed by US study

A significant gender earnings gap is evident in pharmacy, with male pharmacists earning a six per cent higher income on average compared with female pharmacists, US research shows. 
 
A survey of 1478 pharmacists in South Florida found the difference in incomes between male and female pharmacists remained after controlling for potential confounders including numbers of hours worked, work force, job preferences and opinion variables.
The survey found working more hours, holding a pharmacy degree and having more children increased men’s earnings more than women’s earnings.
 
An editorial said the gender salary divide could be explained by differences in interruptions in the professional trajectory between men and women.
