Less than a decade ago at the dawn of the millennium, it was evident that Australia faced a crisis in its pharmacy workforce. The shortage of pharmacists experienced in city and country, nationwide, was even more substantial in rural Australia.
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia released a report in 2000 predicting a shortfall of about 3,000 pharmacists by 2010.
For many years, the number of graduates had been tightly regulated by the profession; average graduate numbers increased by less than five per cent per year before 2002 and a move from three-year to four-year university degrees meant few pharmacy graduates in 1999.
