A tweaking of the PBS schedule, an extension of prescribing rights to nurses and midwives and a boost to National Prescribing Service funding were the main points affecting pharmacy from the Rudd Government’s second Budget.

A concerted attack on the PBS rumoured in the weeks before the Budget’s release and predicted to affect more than 100 drugs did not eventuate.
Instead, the Federal Government expects to shave at least $113.8 million from its PBS expenditure by putting two popular medications in a new therapeutic group.
Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) and Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium) — two cholesterol-lowering drugs that rank first and fourth respec tively in terms of cost to the Government — will be placed in a Therapeutic Group Premium (TGP) category....
