Floods, a spate of bankruptcies, Pfizer Direct. It has been a difficult year for community pharmacy in many respects. However, 2011 also saw the successful launch of new models of pharmacy practice. Nick O’Donoghue takes a look at some of the key stories in pharmacy in 2011.
Floods
From the millions of dollars worth of damage caused by flooding, changes to trading terms with wholesalers to the rising number of community pharmacies that have gone bankrupt, 2011 was a tough year for the profession.
While the floods in Queensland, northern NSW and Victoria caused significant damage to many pharmacies, the profession showed its character with pharmacists adopting emergency supply services in the areas worst affected in January.
