Aussie slang such as “should I see a gynie” can be amusing, but an innovative language program is teaching international first-year pharmacy students Australian colloquialisms to help in serious situations.
The language program was developed by experts from the University of Queensland’s (UQ’s) School of Pharmacy, UQ’s Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education, and the Teaching and Educational Development Institute.
Jacqueline Bond, project team leader, from the University of Queensland, School of Pharmacy, said Australian sayings could “completely bamboozle” pharmacists from non-Australian backgrounds.
“Someone might tell a pharmacist they have a gut-ache, had a chunder, caught a wog, chucked a sickie, couldn’t eat brekkie or got bitten by mozzies,” she said.
