With fears rising of a potential oversupply of pharmacists, graduates should be trained to work in non-traditional roles, Warwick Plunkett, PSA national president believes.
After the Department of Immigration announced pharmacy would be back on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) from 1 July, Mr Plunkett said universities needed to prepare students to take on positions in industry and public health as well as community and hospital pharmacy roles.
He feels such a move would not only increase their chances of securing employment, but would also increase the profession's influence.
“There are other roles that pharmacists could and should play, but haven’t in the past,” he said.
“We’ve sent a few into industry, but we don’t have a large number taking up roles in industry...
