Community pharmacies are shutting their doors on public holidays due to the impact of Fair Work Australia laws, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia claims.
In a submission to the workplace umpire, Wendy Philips, Guild executive director, revealed more than a third of pharmacy owners had decided to reduce hours or cease trading on public holidays since Fair Work legislation commenced in January 2010.
A survey carried out by the Guild found more than 50 per cent of pharmacies were reducing their staffing numbers and had decreased the overall hours offered to employees, due to the Pharmacy Industry Award 2010, Ms Philips said.
