Champix associated with gastrointestinal effects

Use of the popular smoking cessation drug varenicline (Champix) at a maintenance dose for longer than six weeks is associated with adverse gastrointestinal effects, new research shows. 
A meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials involving 5114 smokers, found Champix used at a maintenance dose of 1mg twice a day for longer than six weeks was significantly associated with nausea, and to a lesser extent, constipation and flatulence, compared with placebo.
 
Canadian reviewers said all of the studies reported an association between Champix use and nausea, translating into almost a five-fold risk of nausea with use of Champix.
