Health professionals should notify memory disorders “strongly associated” with hypnotics, newer anticonvulsants and serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRIs) in elderly people particularly, expert say.
A study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, identified 519 cases of memory loss based on 188, 284 adverse drug reactions recorded in the French PharmacoVigilance Database.
The authors said a “strong association” was found between memory problems and benzodiazepine-like hypnotics such as zolpidem and zopiclone, analgesics including morphine, nefopam and tramadol, newer anticonvulsants including topiramate, pregabalin, levetiracetam, lamotrigine and gabapentin, and the antipsychotics, aripiprazole and lithium.
Zolpidem showed the highest association with memory disorders with almost a 24-fold relative risk.
