Expert warns against paracetamol use in children with asthma

Children with a family history of asthma should avoid using paracetamol (acetaminophen), a leading paediatric pulmonologist believes.
Writing in the journal Pediatrics, Dr John McBride, from Northeast Ohio Medical University, US, said a growing number of studies showed a strong association between paracetamol exposure and asthma, which suggest the dramatic increase in childhood asthma over the past 30 years was related to paracetamol.
 
Commenting on the findings of the International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood, Dr McBride reported increases in the prevalence and severity of asthma in children in the six-seven-year-old and 13 – 14-year-old age groups.
 
“Nearly 30 per cent of all 13 – 14-year-olds reported taking acetaminophen at least once per month,” he said.
