Pharmacists need to be “medicineswise” when recommending generic substitution to consumers, the NPS warns.
As reported by Pharmacy News, Ranbaxy’s Trovas, the first generic atorvastatin, will be available in Australian pharmacies by the end of this week, but the NPS has said switching brands might not be an option for everyone.
The warning comes as the Generic Medicines Industry Association (GMiA) urged pharmacists against bulk purchases of generic medicines in advance of market competition, in a press release.
“With any medicine, making the decision to change brands can have both benefits and risks,” the NPS said.
