The majority of pharmacy owners are paying above award wages, says the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, despite claims that employee pharmacists' pay-packets shrank last year.
Responding to claims by employee pharmacist union, APESMA, that the average hourly rate for pharmacists fell by 9.3 per cent in 2011, the Guild accused the union of talking down the profession.
A survey of more than 1500 pharmacists, carried out by APESMA, revealed the average pharmacist was earning $34.38 per hour in 2011, down from $37.92 in 2010.
Chris Walton, APESMA CEO, said it was the first time average pharmacy wages had declined since the survey was first conducted in 2000.
