Mainstream newspapers were incorrect in labelling pharmacy owners as low payers, according to the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.
A report in the Australian Financial Review (10 January), which was repeated in the Hobart Mercury (11 January), claimed investigations by the Fair Work Ombudsman into the retail industry had revealed a third of pharmacy owners had failed to pay employees correctly.
However, the figures used in the article referred to “pharmaceutical and other store-based retailing using only the retail award” and not pharmacies, a Guild spokesperson said.
“The Fair Work Ombudsman audit was of the retail award only – community pharmacies were not to included in this particular audit,” the spokesperson said.
