Maternal paracetamol use a child asthma risk

Pregnant women should only use the popular pain reliever paracetamol when necessary, as it increases the risk of having children with asthma, a study reveals.
The authors made the recommendation after conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of six randomised controlled trials and observational studies investigating the association between paracetamol use in pregnancy and the subsequent development of asthma in childhood.
The review found children aged between two and a half and seven years old, born to women who took paracetamol during their pregnancy had a 21 per cent greater risk of wheeze after one year compared with children whose mother’s did not take paracetamol during pregnancy.
