Multiple barriers still restricting HMR uptake

An Australian study has identified multiple barriers remain to performing home medicines reviews (HMRs) in elderly patients.
Poor GP participation in the program, and a shortage of accredited pharmacists were among the barriers identified.
The study, published in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice, gathered perspectives from pharmacists, GPs and general practice nurses.
The main reasons given by GPs for the low participation rate included time constraints and workload, not having HMRs in the forefront of their minds during consultations and competing priorities due to the large number of government-subsidised health programs available.
Debbie Rigby, chair of the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy (AACP) Board, said HMRs were not “top of mind” for GPs and called for the introduction of pop-ups...
