Pfizer is remaining tight-lipped in the wake of reports the company is seeking to have blockbuster drug Lipitor (atorvastatin) rescheduled as an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine.
With Lipitor’s US patent due to expire in November, the New York Times reported an OTC version would allow Pfizer to retain a portion of the US$11 billion annual revenue that drug creates.
While the Australian patent does not expire until May 2012, a Pfizer Australia spokesperson declined to confirm or deny the possibility that the company may seek to have it rescheduled by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, when contacted by Pharmacy News.
