The size and shape of the blockbuster statin, Lipitor (atorvastatin) will become smaller in every way this June, but each pill will deliver the same cardiovascular benefits as before.
The trimmed down tablet size, announced last night, comes as part of manufacturer Pfizer’s global strategy to increase efficient use of resources.
A company statement said the new round pills will replace the current oval-shaped tablets and “should be easier to swallow”, while maintaining the same levels of active ingredient.
“The amount of active ingredient in Lipitor, atorvastatin calcium, is not changing; therefore the company says the one million patients taking Lipitor in Australia can be assured their medicine will provide the same cardiovascular health benefits, despite the tablet reducing in size.
