Quit rates higher in smokers who persist with NRT after lapses

Smokers attempting to quit but who lapse while continuing to use nicotine replacement patches are more likely to successfully quit.
A US study, published in Addiction, and led by Dr Stuart Ferguson, from the University of Tasmania, investigated whether active nicotine patch use improved the chances of recovering abstinence in 509 smokers who had lapsed three to five weeks after being treated with 21-mg nicotine patches.
The study, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, showed smokers randomised to continue using NRT following a smoking lapse were 9.6 per cent more likely to recover after 10 weeks compared with 2.6 per cent who received placebo patches after experiencing a lapse.
