Rethink needed on drug safety advice during pregnancy

Potentially misleading advice given to pregnant women about drug safety, even if based on Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC) categorisations, may be putting these women and their babies at significant risk, an Australian expert has warned.    
Dr Debra Kennedy, a clinical geneticist at MotherSafe, Royal Hospital for Women, highlighted survey results showing pharmacists and GPs often dispensed conservative advice regarding medications during pregnancy, in a perspective published in the MJA.
A survey of 130 pharmacists and GPs by MotherSafe, a counselling service for women and health care providers who are concerned about exposures during pregnancy and breastfeeding, found they relied heavily on ADEC categorisations.
