Experts have warned of increasing evidence of adverse events resulting from the use of common menopause and osteoprosis treatments.
Professor Peter Ebeling, head of the department of Endocrinology at Western Health in Melbourne, will present information on the risks of benefits of bisphosphonates at the 15th Australasian Menopause Society Congress, in Brisbane this week.
He said evidence showed aminobisphosphonates such as alendronate, risedronate and zoledronic acid reduced the risk of all major types of fractures, including vertebral, non-vertebral and hip fractures and bisphosphonates may also reduce mortality.
However, common adverse effects of bisphosphonates included upper gastrointestinal effects, but these were less frequent with oral dosing and enteric-coated tablets, he said.
