Alternative remedies flout advertising rules

Widespread flouting of advertising rules by the alternative medicines marketers is undermining any confidence in the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulatory system, according to a government report.
As many as 90 per cent of alternative products reviewed were found to be “non-compliant” with regulatory requirements, and a “significant number” had to be removed by the medicine watchdog, according to ministerial briefing documents released this week show.
The documents, prepared by the Department of Health and Ageing and released under Freedom of Information laws, reveal the TGA had to review or monitor around 26 per cent of newly-listed complimentary medicines between 2009 and 2010.
