Almost half of all patients diagnosed with hypertension are not taking medication prescribed to manage their condition, a new study reveals.
A survey of 9000 people carried out by the National Heart Foundation found one-in-three had been told they had high blood pressure by a doctor, yet medication compliance was poor, despite hypertension being a cause of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease.
A statement from the Heart Foundation revealed 43.5 per cent of respondents were not taking their blood pressure medication.
The figure was even higher for women, with 47 per cent of women told by their doctor they have high blood pressure reporting they do not take medication.
