Osteoporosis treatment subsidy expanded
Elderly patients with osteoporosis and no prior fracture, will now be reimbursed for Fosomax treatment under the PBS.
On Monday, Merck Sharp & Dohme announced that patients 70 years and older, with a bone mineral density (BMD) T-score of -2.5 or less, and no prior fracture, would be able to access osteoporosis treatment on the PBS.
Fosomax (alendronate sodium), Fosamax Plus (alendronate sodium/colecalciferol), Fosomax Plus D-cal (alendronate sodium/colecalciferol + calcium carbonate), and other alendronate formulations are now the only treatments listed on the PBS for these patients.
The expansion of reimbursement criteria for Fosomax has changed from the old criteria, using a BMD T-score of -3.0 or less to a BMD T-score of -2.5 or less.
