A second treatment option has now been approved by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for children suffering with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
Melbourne-based paediatric rheumatologist Dr Roger Allen welcomed the additional listing of Humira (adalimumab) for the condition which affects more than 5000 Australian children.
Dr Allen said the fortnightly treatment would give health care professionals a choice of effective options when treating JIA patients.
“Adalimumab is now one of two biologics available to us. Having more than one option helps us to manage the condition in a way that meets the specific needs and circumstances of each patient and their family,” he said.
