Statins and antihypertensives are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in Australia, according to the latest annual figures from NPS Medicine Wise.

Despite their common use, none of the most frequently prescribed drugs in Australia appear in the top 10 drugs by cost.

That list is dominated by sofosbuvir and its combinations for the treatment of hepatitis C for July 2017-June 2018.

Drugs to treat hepatitis C have cost the taxpayer more than $1 billion in 2018, topping the list of drugs ranked by cost to the government.
