Cochrane reviewers take a stab a providing an answer

The efficacy of honey for treating cough symptoms in children remains uncertain.
A Cochrane Review including half a dozen randomised controlled trials found no strong evidence for or against its use.
The studies compared honey with dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, salbutamol, bromelin (an enzyme from the pineapple family), no treatment and placebo.
